Research project: Filling in the gaps: examining (parasite) biodiversity of African wetland macroinvertebrates in context of One Health and conservation policy – AfroWetMaP
My PhD is part of the AfroWetMaP project, and I’m working closely with my advisor, Dr. Kmentová. AfroWetMaP aims to expand the knowledge available on the often-overlooked freshwater macroinvertebrates and their associated parasitical fauna in the African Great Lakes region. I focus on increasing the taxonomic resolution available for freshwater ecosystem monitoring purposes by using a combination of traditional and molecular identification methods. Next to that, I’m studying the cultural perceptions various local stakeholders have on these macroinvertebrates in the hopes of discovering more effective ways to translate scientific research into conservation policy.
My favorite quote: “Do it scared.”
